Art Graduate Study Students interesting in pursuing art graduate school are encouraged to review the below sample list of colleges in the US and abroad. A Master of Fine Arts degree is often thought to be a requirement for teaching at the college level; however, professional practice, which is reflected through one's exhibition record, has become a more important consideration for employers. November 12, 2010 Susan Tveekrem, Managing Director of Bard College's summer-based MFA program, was joined by Adriana Farmiga (Art '96) and Carmelle Safdie (Art '05) to discuss its interdisciplinary approach to the creative mediums of Film/Video, Music/Sound, Painting, Photography, Sculpture, and Writing. November 18, 2009 Garth Weiser (Art '03) talked about his experience applying for graduate school, his life as a student at Columbia University School of the Arts, Visual Art Program, and his career as a working artist. October 15, 2008 Kiel Scott (Art '05) offered first-hand insight into the MFA application process, including how to research programs and how to prepare for in-person and telephone interviews. Mr. Scott is currently pursuing a MFA in filmmaking at New York University's Graduate Film Program. October 11, 2007 Juan Sanchez (Art '77), professor of art, Hunter College/CUNY, discussed how to best communicate ones abilities through the application process and materials. Information about sources for funding art graduate school was also made available. Students and recent alumni were invited to attend the presentation and discussion. October 10, 2006 Sam Messer, Cooper alumnus and associate dean of Yale University School of Art, offered insight into the MFA application process, including the practical methods of completing a competitive application, how to prepare for an in-person interview, and what to expect after graduation. Mr. Messer invited interested students to attend the Yale University School of Art Open House on Nov 16, 2006. The following is the Open House schedule: 1:30- 2 pm check in, 2 pm group meeting with remarks by Dean Robert Storr; 2:30 pm meeting and tours with directors of graduate studies; and 4 pm reception social hour opening of first-year MFA exhibition. |
